Extensions - Ace - 07-01-2020

Salaries

Extensions must follow the contract rules and can only be offered during the final year of a deal* (considered to be the third year of arbitration for players on prospect contracts).

The salary is determined by the player's highest ranking from the past two seasons.

The rankings are derived from a proprietary formula which takes into account performance in the 12 scored categories as well our league settings.

Position players are ranked by their overall hitter rank. If outside of the top 160 in both seasons then the value is $2m per season.

Pitchers are split into starters and relievers. SP outside of top 90 have a value of $1.6m and RP outside of top 60 have a value of $1.2m.

Regardless of the ranking any extension must be at least 33% of the player's current salary. This is increased to 50% for Arb-4 players and to 66% for Arb-3 players (so $4m minimum for A3/A4 hitters and SP).

*Each team is permitted to perform two early extensions per season for players in the penultimate year of their contracts. In these cases the annual salary must be at least 80% of the average remaining annual salary (excluding 4th arbitration seasons) and also at least $5m in every season. The player must be extended before opening day and subsequently can't be traded before the all-star break or released until the next year. Early extensions for veteran contracts are placed after the final season of the current deal whereas for second year arbitration players they begin the following year and override the A3/A4 seasons.

Deadlines/Surcharges

From opening day to the May extension deadline those rankings apply but the salaries shall be subject to a 10% surcharge which is added to the ranking value or positional minimum value.

After this teams must wait until the end of the season where the 2023 and 2024 rankings will determine the salary and the increased surcharges will apply.

If the player is unranked in both years then 10% is added to the positional minimum value. Other rules will then apply as normal.

For the 2024 off-season the extension salary will be the greater of the 2023 value +20% or the 2024 value + 30%.

After moving into the 2025 financial year teams may extend players based on their 2023 and 2024 rankings at any time prior to opening day without surcharges (extended players are subject to trade restrictions).

All extensions should be worked out using the Extension Calculator.

Dual Eligibility Players

If a pitcher is ranked on both the SP and RP lists then the highest salary is taken.

If a pitcher appears on neither list then the values are such:

20+ games started in most recent season = $1.6m

10+ games started in most recent season = $1.4m

Otherwise (or if the average start length was less than 2 innings) = $1.2m

If a player qualifies as both a hitter and a pitcher then his extension cost shall be the higher of the two salaries plus 50% of the lower amount.
